Upcoming Everest 1921 events

In September 2021, Westmeath County Council launched an online exhibition – everest1921.com – created by Historian in Residence Ian Kenneally, to commemorate Howard-Bury’s leadership of the first reconnaissance expedition to Mount Everest in 1921.

This short film highlights aspects of the exhibition through a series of interviews with Frank Nugent – historian, mountaineer and deputy leader of the 1993 Irish expedition to Mount Everest.

As part of the commemorations, Frank Nugent will deliver two lectures in Westmeath during the next few weeks:

  • Wednesday, 17 November, 8.15pm – in the Sheraton Hotel, Athlone. The event is organised with the Old Athlone Society and admission is free.
  • Wednesday, 1 December, 8pm – via Zoom (the Westmeath Archaeological and Historical Society will provide the relevant invite closer to the date).
