Welcome to your monthly roundup of exciting events happening across Westmeath Libraries this June! From children's activities to cultural celebrations, there's something for everyone.


Cruinniú na nÓg - Saturday, June 7th

National Day of Creativity for Children & Young People - Join us for a special day of creativity and fun at libraries across Westmeath!

In Mullingar Library

Join Crane Art for some drop in sessions from 11 - 1pm.

Swish & Jiggle Under the Sea!
Swish, jiggle and join us for an underwater adventure! This gentle session blends music, movement, and ocean-inspired fun. We’ll sing songs, sway like seaweed, and listen to a beautiful story from beneath the waves. Children will also create their very own shaker instrument to take home. Perfect for preschoolers who love the sea, sound, and creativity. This event is free but places are limited so booking is essential - age range 2 - 5 year olds
Session 1 from 10am - 10.40am
Session 2 from 11am - 11.40am

Holy Family National School Presents: Children Of Lir: An Original Work By 2nd Class & Clann Na Nog Class Students
12:15pm – 1:15pm
Join us for a special screening of Children Of Lir, a work created by the 2nd class & Clann Na Nog class students of Holy Family NS. Part of the Westmeath Whisperings Project. Also featuring a behind-the-scenes film documenting the creative journey they took with composer Carrie Harding. Pottery Jam is a free ceramics workshop for kids aged 9-15 with ceramicist Stephanie Mc Guinness of Superlinea studio in Castlepollard. You will learn ceramics techniques and get to keep your own fired ceramic work!
There will be two hour-long workshops throughout the morning, at 10:00-11:00, and then at 11:30-12:30. Please note: These pieces will be fired and glazed in Stephanie's studio. There will be a day allocated when the pieces will be available for pick up in the library 3 weeks after the workshop. Spaces are limited and booking is required

In Aidan Heavey, Athlone

Groove and Move - Join Miss Annie from Music Generation Westmeath for a fun music session full of grooving and moving! Free but booking required!

Inspiration Stations - Creative Writing workshops
10.30am - 12noon
Westmeath Libraries in association with Fighting Words will facilitate a creative writing workshop for children ages 8-11 in Athlone Library on Saturday 7th June. The aim is to help children and young people to discover and harness the power of their imaginations and creative writing skills. These workshops are one of many projects run by Fighting Words, a Dublin-based creative writing organisation, founded by Roddy Doyle and Seán Love.

In Castlepollard Library

Inspiration Stations with Kind Kids - join us for some drop in art and crafts activity in Castlepollard Library. No need to book, all welcome between 11am and 1pm

In Moate Library

Inspiration Stations with Art Box - Join us for some drop in Arts & crafts in Moate Library. All welcome, no need to book. Call in between 11am and 1pm.

Inspiration Stations with Noel O'Farrell - Enjoy some music and a singalong with Noel in Moate - all welcome.


Food Waste Recycling Week

During National Food Waste Recycling Week (June 1st to 7th 2025)  Westmeath County Council aim to encourage everyone to recycle food waste by providing practical advice along with hints and tips on how easy it is to recycle and get everyone involved.

Join Anna Browne in Westmeath Libraries and learn how to stop food waste, and how to make your waste work for you.

Snap a selfie at one of our Food Waste events, and tag us(@WestmeathLibraries) on facebook or instagram and you'll be in with the chance to win a prize!

Summer Stars

Summer is here, and that means Summer Stars time! So drop in to your local library and find out more. We'll have a reading booklet for you, as well as bookmarks that you can plant. Plus the winners of our Monster Sticker competition will be revealed, as well as the stickers themselves. Keep reading over the summer and make sure you collect them all!


Little Library Book Bags

If you have a member of the family starting primary school in 2025 make sure and collect their FREE Little Library Book bag. This specially designed bag  is full of goodies, including  a book on starting school and a book on making friends. The bag also contains resources for parents and family members to help the whole family adjust to the changes which come with starting school.

  • Author Event with Dr. Rose Borunda
    Tue 17 June, 6:00–7:00pm – Athlone
    From her own Purepecha tribal ancestry she has captured the story of a legendary princess from the early 1500’s while weaving in the challenges of a modern-day young woman who bears the same name, Eréndira.  Dr. Borunda will engage the audience in the presentation of Eréndira while integrating Indigenous flute, rhythm, and storytelling. On this one-day excursion to Athlone, Dr. Borunda will share the magic of diverse Indigenous narratives from the American continent.

    This group meets every fortnight and is open to all those who experience mental health difficulties and provides a safe, confidential space for people to share their experiences.     Athlone Gambit Chess Club meet fortnightly at Athlone Library. Come along to compete in a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere! The club is for adults. New members and all levels are welcome.
