Kathleen from Athlone Library reviews The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls.

This is a memoir of a successful journalist's journey from the deserted mining towns of the American Southwest.

Jeanette’s father was an intelligent man, but was an alcoholic unable to support his family. Her mother was an Artist, in her own world, and was not very domesticated.

Jeannette grew up in a very dysfunctional family moving to different places at the drop of a pin.

This book is filled with a lot of emotions, sexual abuse, poverty and neglect.

There were four children in her family and at times they had a very exciting life as they lived like nomads.

The reason I liked this book so much is it was a true story. It was sad and funny at the same time. Most of all the children managed to rise above it all and make a successful career for themselves and now live in new York. It also made me realise how lucky we are, and made me appreciate even more what we have.

The Glass Castle is now a major motion picture staring Brie Larson, Naomi Watts and Woody Harrelson
