Celebrating Africa Day 2024

Africa Day is an annual celebration of the people and cultures of this wonderful continent. This year it was celebrated on 25th May, and to mark the occasion Moate Library are hosting an exhibition by Lesley Wingfield "Faces of Africa", depicting some of the rich and diverse African cultures living in our community.

Lesley Wingfield is an artist based in Athlone. She was born in London but has been a resident in Ireland for many years. She is a founding member of Shambles Art Studios, Athlone where she continues to practice.

If you are interested in celebrating the culture of Africa why not watch and listen to Simmy's Stories, or find out more about Yoruba culture on our facebook page.

And remember we also have loads of books by African authors on our shelves such as Half of a Yellow Sun by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, The first woman by Jennifer Nansubuga Makumbi, Arrow of God by Chinua Achebe, How beautiful we were by Imbolo Mbue, and many many more.
